The year after a model receives a refresh is usually fairly tame. The 2017 VW Passat was updated to have a more chiseled appearance that gave it an executive feel, while offering much of the same refined feel for which the model is known. What could the 2018 Volkswagen Passat offer to Tampa FL drivers that it didn’t in 2017? As it turns out, quite a lot.

Major highlights for the 2018 VW Passat include an engine upgrade that is both more powerful and more efficient, a new bumper-to-bumper warranty, and a sportier trim level that offers the robust 280-horsepower engine. For those who have been on the fence about upgrading to the Passat, this year is the one to look out for. It has all the appearance enhancements and quality feel, but with better performance and a higher expected resale value.

2018 VW Passat Engine Specs

For anyone who knows anything about engines, Volkswagen is popular because of its small-displacement, turbocharged engines. The VW Passat previously had the 1.8-liter turbo four under the hood, but for 2018 the vehicle gets a small upgrade to a 2.0-liter TSI. What does this mean for you? Horsepower gets a small boost to 174 from 170 horses. Is it going to help you win any races? No, but it doesn’t hurt. Just like the EPA-estimated 25 city and 36 highway mpg rating, up from 23/34 respectively, offers a slight improvement. It’s the little, everyday things that add up over time, and the 2018 VW Passat is just that edge better than the previous model year.

The warranty, of course, is the big news for this model year. A three-year, 36,000-mile warranty has long been a standard in the automotive industry. Volkswagen has decided it’s time to go above and beyond what’s standard. The new People First Warranty offers transferable bumper-to-bumper coverage for six years or 72,000 miles, whichever comes first. As a new car is always an expensive purchase, it helps to know that any defects won’t come out of your pocket. Plus, great coverage means slower depreciation. Who doesn’t like to hear that?

What else should you watch out for? This model year comes in a total of six trims: S, R-Line, SE, SE with Technology, GT and SEL Premium. The GT is a new option for the model year, offering up the 280-horsepower V6 engine along with many style enhancements. The new trim is expected to hit dealerships mid-model year.
